Is Your Garden Hose a Big Annoying Drip?
Is there a drip from the spigot of your outdoor garden hose? Are you finding small puddles under the spigot?
Watch the video.
No big deal, you are thinking. So what if there's a small drip? It's not wasting that much water. Wrong! You can waste an enormous amount water with even a small but steady drip and, even worse, you may also be ignoring a potentially dangerous situation.
In addition to wasting a precious resource, a steady drip can cause water damage to the foundation of your house -potentially a very serious problem. The last thing you want are foundation problems that can cost thousands of dollars and seriously affect the value of your house. Also, if you live in a cold weather climate, a dripping faucet can cause the pipes in your house to freeze and then burst; another potentially expensive repair.
So take a moment to fix that pesky leak and make sure it does not come back to haunt you in the future.
In most cases, the leak can be repaired by tightening the packing nut that is directly under the spigot. Using a wrench, give the nut a quarter turn. In most cases, this will take care of the drip.
If this does not work, you may need to shut off the water and replace the spigot. That is a much more complicated repair but it is always best to try the simple easy fix first and go from there.
In many cases, this simple tightening will stop the leak and you are on your way. You have saved some water and prevented damage to the foundation of your home. Quick and easy, just the way we like all our home improvement tasks!
